Red days by autonomous community across Spain for 2017

The 2nd January is the first of 14 days of holiday enjoyed by Spanish employees in addition to the holidays specified in their employment contracts, although not every Region of Spain has opted to take the 2nd January as a regional holiday. The system of Autonomous Communities, or regional governments, permits each of the 17 autonomous regions, which constitute Spain to select the days considered most appropriate at a local level, although 8 of the 14 days are set by the state and may not be substituted by any other date.

For 2017 these are:

April 14th (Friday), May 1st (Monday), August 15th (Tuesday), October 12th (Thursday), November 1st (Wednesday), December 6th (Wednesday), December 8th (Friday) and December 25th(Monday).

In addition to these, January 6th, Three Kings Day (Friday), will be a holiday in all of the autonomous communities because no region has decided to change this holiday to another day.

There are four other national holidays that the autonomous communities can choose to substitute: January 2nd (Monday after New Year), which is a holiday in only Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castile and Leon, Murcia and Melilla, and April 13th (Thursday Santo), which will be a holiday in all the autonomous communities except in Catalonia, a region that has chosen to move it to April 17th (Easter Monday).

Monday, March 20th (the day after San Jose) and Tuesday, July 25th (Feast of the Apostle Santiago) are also flexible should the autonomous communities choose to move them to another date.

March 20th will only be a holiday in Extremadura and Madrid and July 25th will only be celebrated in Galicia, Navarra and the Basque Country.

In addition to these holidays each autonomous community adds its own regional day and then each local municipal council chooses two further dates which are considered local holidays and must still be awarded to employees, making a total of 14 days off in 2017.
